Day 7 Jan 20
The “Tongariro Alpine Crossing” is considered one of the World’s best one day walks...the paths are steep, rocky and uneven and not really conducive to bad knees so Nanc and Deb decline...I start the hike with a group of over 20 people and end up walking with Donnette a young woman from S. Africa...the day is dark, cloudy and foggy...poor conditions for a hike but we labor on. We finally get to the top and there is no reward of a view...can’t see the crater, the emerald lakes or even the the blue lake...hard work for no views...we make our way down the mountain which was just as hard as going up...do the whole hike in a little under 6 hours...we feel triumphant...there are only 6 people ahead of us so the “old man and young girl” have done well. Upgrade to a indoor room at Bridge Lodge for some serious relaxation.
