The Gisborne Museum, Wyllie Cottage and such.

The Gisborne museum has many parts to it...part museum, part art gallery, part war memorial, part surf/kayak/waka exhibit and part "Canadian Star" Ship memorial. Of course every part is pretty small. Payed our $5 and away we go...interestingly they do not allow any photograph's to be taken...what?...I have just visited some of the most famous museums in the world and they all allow photo's...some may not allow flash, but pics are alwasy OK...too bad I can't share any of the cool stuff we saw. The Museum itself is set up in chronological order starting with Maori discovery, then 1st contact with Europeans and then onto the treaties between the cultures...pretty interesting, you actuall start in one spot and work your way into present time. The war memorial was centered on the Maori company "C" group that fought in the 2nd World War, lots of photos and commendations sited...during the war this group took the heaviest casualties of all NZ Companies, 2 men won the Victorian Cross (England's top Honor for bravery)...I bet these guys were fearless warriors. Again no photo's allowed, the surf/kayak/waka exhibit was cool and the Canadian Star was built out like part of the ship that grounded and sunk just outside the harbor. Along with the museum and such your $5 also gets you into Wyllie Cottage, the oldest European building on the west side of the river...cute little place. The grounds are terrific, very park like with trees, flowers, and river frontage.
