Day 3 Jan 16
Up early and back on the road...sand boogy boarding at Opononi is our 1st stop, the ride down the dunes is fast and fun...the walk up the sand is hard and tiring...fun adventure but I was only good for 3 runs, if there was a chairlift or gondola I could of done much more...I’m such a 60 year old baby...I really thought Italy had me ready for all this. Next we took the ride to the Waipoua Forest and the 2500 year old Kauri Tree (Tane Mahuta - I’m not sure if this refers to this tree or the god of all these types of trees)...this is one of the most ancient ecosystems on the planet and has shrunk down to nothing. Made our way to our next camp, put up the tents, a little dinner and then headed over to a hotsprings spa and resort...this place had pools as hot as 45C (to hot to sit in), slides in warm water, a pool of hot water where you could watch a movie and more pools in every direction...a fun and soothing night...we are ready for our 3rd night of sleeping tent style. Holly re-joined us later in the evening so we are back at full strength. Only problem I see is the bus is struggling to make it up any kind of incline and the gear box doesn’t seem to be working very well...let’s hope there’s no breakdown. Interesting group of people...I’m certainly not use to hangin with this many people in such close quarters all day...yikes...we’ll see.
